The Guardain ,Tom Gardner qustioning the world stated : “ From Noble peace prize to civil war. how Ethiopian’s leader beguiled the world” and Eliza Mackintosh of CNN “From Nobel laureate to global pariah: How the world got Abiy Ahmed and Ethiopia so wrong” about Charlatan who clad as an Angale Abiy Ahmed who stated “war is the epitome of hell.”
The charlatan, who read carefully selected written scrivens that fit the ears and the minds of the committee and the confused world of the political quagmire of the colonial Abyssinian Empire, the open prison house lurching from crisis to crisis over the centuries.
The Proverb of Yoruba people formulation: “Otito lo soja o kuta, iro laraye bo witiwiti,” literal translation: “Truth goes to market and makes no sales, but people buy lies with ready cash.” It reflects the real face of Abiy who sold the lies and the decived local and global commuity who boguht it to rgreet te most within elven months.
The Anatomy of a Charlatan
In contemporary political science, a “charlatan” is defined as a person falsely claiming to have a special knowledge or skill, operating largely through theatricality, linguistic manipulation, and the exploitation of public credulity. In April 2018, when Abiy Ahmed assumed the premiership of Ethiopia, he was marketed to the world as a generational reformer—a charismatic, multilingual visionary destined to democratize Africa’s second-most populous nation.
Abiy’s governance is defined by messianic authoritarianism, historical revisionism, and an unquenchable pursuit of personal dictatorship.
However, beneath the veneer of Medemer (his nebulous philosophy of “synergy”) lay a deeply hardened operative forged in the clandestine crucible of Ethiopia’s secretive security apparatus. This stude traces Abiy’s metamorphosis across four distinct phases:
The militant youth (Child Soldier);
The surveillance architect (Spy Agent);
The domestic tyrant (Architect of Civil War); and
The regional destabilizer (Global Pariah).
2. The Crucible of Extremism: From 14-Year-Old Child Soldier to EPRDF Cadre
Abiy Ahmed’s formative years were defined not by civic education or institutional statecraft, but by armed insurgency. At age 14, he joined the armed struggle against the Derg regime, operating within the ranks of the TPLF-led coalition (EPRDF).
The Psychological Impact: Entering an insurgency as a child soldier imprints a worldview characterized by paranoia, zero-sum survival dynamics, and the normalization of violence as a primary tool of political negotiation.
The Cadre Mentality: In the EPRDF training academies, Abiy learned the Leninist mechanics of democratic centralism, ideological orthodoxy, and relentless surveillance. He learned to speak the language of revolutionary democracy while mastering the art of internal factionalism. His early career was defined by opportunistic alignments, allowing him to navigate the shifting sands of ethnic federalism under the dominant TPLF regime without ever developing a foundational commitment to constitutionalism or human rights.
3. The Apparatus of Control: The Rise of the Spy Agent
Abiy’s true political genius lies in his manipulation of state security. He transitioned smoothly from military combatant to the architecture of state surveillance.
INSA and Cyber-Surveillance: Abiy served as the founding director of the Ethiopian Science and Technology Information Center and later as the co-founder and deputy director of the Information Network Security Agency (INSA), Ethiopia’s premier electronic intelligence and cyber-espionage wing.
The Deep State Operative: In this role, Abiy sat at the intersection of state wiretapping, opposition infiltration, and data manipulation. He mastered the compilation of dossiers, the art of character assassination, and the exploitation of ethnic fault lines. When popular protests (Qeerroo and Fanno movements) paralyzed the EPRDF regime between 2015 and 2018, the ruling elite turned to Abiy—the consummate insider-outsider—to manage a managed transition that would preserve elite capture while sacrificing figureheads.
4. The Noble Fraud: The Nobel Peace Prize and the Rise to Dictatorship
Upon seizing power in 2018, Abiy enacted a series of rapid populist reforms: releasing political prisoners, inviting exiled opposition groups home, and signing a historic peace deal with Eritrea’s Isaias Afwerki. These actions earned him international adulation, culminating in the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize.
However, retrospect reveals these moves not as democratic conversions, but as tactical maneuvers designed to consolidate personal power by dismantling rival power centers (particularly the TPLF) and forging an unholy alliance with Asmara to wage a war of annihilation.
The Deconstruction of Federalism: Abiy dismantled the EPRDF, merging disparate ethnic parties into his centralized Prosperity Party, a move rejected by key regional allies, thereby sowing the seeds for national disintegration.
The Tigray Genocide (2020–2022): Partnering with Eritrean forces and Amhara militias, Abiy launched a military campaign in Tigray characterized by mass atrocities, weaponized starvation, sexual violence, and communications blackouts.
Estimates of excess deaths range from 300,000 to over 600,000 civilians. The man who won a peace prize for ending a conflict with Eritrea immediately initiated one of the bloodiest internal conflicts of the 21st century.
5. From Reformer to Personal Dictator
Today, Abiy Ahmed has discarded the democratic mask entirely, operating as a classic African strongman whose governance relies on three pillars:
Cult of Personality and Messianism: Abiy frequently invokes divine legitimacy, portraying himself as a divinely ordained leader destined to restore Ethiopia’s ancient imperial glory. His multi-billion-dollar vanity projects—such as the Unity Park and the riverside palaces—stand in stark contrast to an economy crippled by hyperinflation, foreign debt default, and widespread famine.
Perpetual War Economy: Having subdued Tigray, Abiy promptly turned his apparatus against virtually all nominal cataloged regions, utilizing drone strikes, mass arrests, and extrajudicial killings against those who stand firm aganist his assimilationsit dictatorial polices. His is e an excutions of necropolitics of historical Negatinism, in apt to ensuring that no autonomous political power base remains unpunished.
Most importantly, he targated the oldest gallant formidable liberation force of the great nation of Africa that makes at least half of the popualtion incarcereated in one of te most backward settler colonial Abyssian empire; The Oromo Liberation Army (WBO) and thier historical allies that turned him sleepless and nightmare.
Total Information Control: Independent journalism has been criminalized through arbitrary detentions, internet shutdowns, and state-sanctioned digital mobbing.
6. The Horn of Africa’s Trouble Maker: The Global Pariah
Domestically illegitimate and economically isolated, Abiy Ahmed has increasingly projected Ethiopia’s domestic crises outward, destabilizing the entire Horn of Africa.
The Red Sea Obsession: Abandoning decades of diplomatic norms, Abiy publicly declared Ethiopia’s “natural right” to access the Red Sea, threatening military force if necessary. This aggressive posturing has inflamed tensions with Eritrea, Djibouti, and Somalia.
The Somaliland Memorandum of Understanding (MoU): In January 2024, Abiy signed a controversial MoU with the breakaway region of Somaliland, leasing a naval base in exchange for hypothetical recognition of Somaliland’s independence. This reckless move fundamentally violated Somalia’s sovereignty, ruptured Mogadishu-Addis Ababa relations, invited external meddling from regional rivals (such as Egypt), and fractured the fragile security architecture of the region (including the fight against Al-Shabaab).
International Isolation: Once feted by Western leaders, Abiy is now viewed with profound distrust in Washington, Brussels, and African Union headquarters. He has transformed Ethiopia from a stable anchor of regional security into a volatile epicenter of geopolitical instability.
The trajectory of Abiy Ahmed—from a child soldier in the trenches of the Ethiopian civil war to a master of electronic espionage, and finally to a megalomaniac dictator—is a cautionary tale of institutional failure and unbridled political ambition. He represents the archetype of the modern political charlatan: a leader who weaponizes the language of peace, reform, and unity to mask a brutal consolidation of autocratic power.
Abiy Ahmed has ensured his legacy will not be that of a statesman, but of a regional destabilizer who squandered the historical promise of freedom, liberty for the sake of personal tyranny rendering the Horn of Africa a powder keg of proxy conflicts.
